What a Stripe payment notification should actually do

A payment notification has one job: tell you the money arrived, at the moment it arrives, on the screen you are already looking at. Stripe does a great deal for you, but the notification you get on a desktop is either an email that shows up minutes later or a number that changes only when you refresh the dashboard.

ChaChing Alerts is a Stripe payment alert you can hear. A successful charge plays a cash register sound in the tab within a couple of seconds, updates your totals for today, this week and this month, and posts to Slack or Discord if you want the rest of the team to hear it too.

  • A Stripe payment sound in any browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux or a Chromebook.
  • Real-time totals for today, this week and this month, per currency.
  • Stripe sale notifications in Slack and Discord, amount and currency only.
  • A full-screen live sales display for a second monitor or a shop TV.
  • A monthly revenue counter that fills with every payment.

Why Stripe's own notifications leave your desktop silent

This is not a flaw in Stripe. It is a difference in what each surface was built for, and it is worth being precise about, because the fix depends on which one you are relying on.

Stripe notification emails are a record, not an alert. They pass through a mail queue and your own inbox rules, and they routinely arrive minutes after the charge. They are also easy to filter into a folder you stop reading.

The Stripe mobile app can play a payment sound, and it is genuinely useful. It is also on your phone, face down, on silent, in another room, and it is not instant: a push notification has to cross Apple or Google and then your phone network, so in our own side by side tests the browser alert arrived a full minute before the phone made a noise. It does nothing for the machine you spend the working day in front of, and nothing for a shop counter.

The Stripe dashboard in a desktop browser is silent by design. New payments appear when the page is refreshed, so the only way to know a sale landed is to go and look. That is the gap: a Stripe desktop payment notification with a sound, without installing anything.

The honest comparison, including the places where Stripe already has you covered. If you only ever need a record of a payment, the email is free and it works.

How to set up real-time Stripe payment notifications

  1. 1

    Point Stripe at us

Copy one URL from your ChaChing Alerts dashboard into Stripe as an event destination for charge.succeeded, then paste the signing secret back. The step by step guide has the screenshots.
  2. 2

    Leave a tab open

On your laptop, a second monitor or the shop counter. Pick a sound, set the volume, click enable sound once, because browsers require one click before a tab may play audio.
  3. 3

    Cha-ching

Every successful Stripe payment plays the sound the moment it lands, with running totals for today, this week and this month.

Who uses real-time Stripe sale notifications

Pick the Stripe payment sound you actually want to hear

Seven sounds ship with it: a classic cha-ching, a cash register, a level-up, a gong, a vibraphone, a marimba and a coin drop. Each one is trimmed to under two seconds and levelled to the same volume, so no sound is louder than another and a busy afternoon does not turn into noise. Every clip is credited on the sound credits page.

Set a big-sale threshold and larger payments get their own treatment, so a $2,000 charge does not sound the same as a $9 one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get Stripe payment notifications on my computer?
Create a ChaChing Alerts account, add one event destination in your own Stripe dashboard using the URL we generate for you, paste the signing secret back, and leave the tab open. Every successful charge then plays a sound in that tab within seconds. Setup takes about two minutes and there is nothing to install.
Does Stripe have a payment sound built in?
On mobile, yes. The Stripe app can play a sound on your phone when a payment succeeds, though it is not instant: push notifications depend on Apple or Google and on your phone network, and in our own tests the alert in the browser arrived about a minute earlier. On a desktop computer the Stripe dashboard is silent, so you find out by refreshing the page or by waiting for an email. That silent gap on the machine you actually work on is what ChaChing Alerts fills.
How fast is a real-time Stripe payment notification?
Stripe sends the charge.succeeded event to our endpoint the moment the charge succeeds, and the browser tab plays the sound as soon as it arrives, normally within a couple of seconds. Notification emails are queued and delivered by mail servers, so they routinely land minutes later, and a phone push has to cross Apple or Google and your mobile network, which in our own tests put it about a minute behind the browser.
Do you need a Stripe API key to send payment alerts?
No. You register an inbound webhook endpoint from inside your own Stripe dashboard, which is a one-way notification: Stripe talks to us and we cannot talk back. There is no API key, no OAuth grant and no login, so nothing here can move, refund or read money in your account.
What Stripe payment data do you store?
Amount, currency and timestamp. That is the whole record. Customer names, emails, card details and metadata are never stored and never appear on screen, which is why the display is safe to leave running on a shop counter.
Can I get Stripe payment notifications for more than one account?
Yes. Connect up to 10 Stripe accounts on the same $4.49 a month subscription and hear every one of them in a single tab, with a separate label per connection so you know which business just got paid.
What happens if I close the tab or my laptop sleeps?
Nothing is lost from your records. Payments that arrive while the tab is closed are still captured, and the totals catch up the moment you open the dashboard again. The sound itself needs an awake browser, which is why display mode exists for a screen that stays on.
